Ways to Make Your Home Smell Cozy
With the first day of Fall arriving this week we are all ready for the cool crisp mornings, warm blankets, and the colors and smells of Fall. About this time of year in the past I would look for the two for 19.99 sale at my favorite shop that sold candles. I would stock up on multiple yummy smells to last the entire season for myself as well as for gifting to friends and family. I loved making my house smell like pumpkin pie or fallen leaves. I wasn’t aware of the dangers synthetic fragrance candles have. I would light a candle or start a scent warmer first thing in the morning and would have one running most of the day. Little did I know I was creating pollution inside my home. Read more about this topic HERE
This is something that was HARD for me to give up; I’ve had a life long love affair with scented candles. Our sense of smell can invoke comfort and a cozy atmosphere whithin our homes. BUT, I quickly discovered safe alternatives! I have to say I don’t miss the candles now, and when I’m around synthetic fragrance I get a headache. It’s amazing what getting away from them can do for our bodies; its worth it friends!
Here are a few safe alternatives to make your home smell like Fall, Christmas, and that Home Sweet Home aroma we love around the holidays!
Throughout my childhood my mom often added apple slices, orange peels, and cinnamon sticks to a small pot on the stove, and she would simmer them with water. It created a warm smell like apple pie or apple cider. I’ve adopted this and have come up with some of my favorite recipes for simmer pots. Before I throw soft apples away or orange peels from breakfast I pop them in a pot, add a cinnamon stick, and simmer with about two inches of water. The house smells amazing within minutes. Play around with your favorite spices. This doesn’t fill the air with synthetic fragrance.
Here are a few of my favorite simmer recipes
Simple Apple Slices and Cinnamon
Orange Peel and/or oranges, Apple Slices, and a Cinnamon Stick
Orange, Lemon, or other Citrus
Lemon and a Sprig of Rosemary
Orange Peel, Lemon, Peppercorn, and a Bay Leave
Cut a sprig of spruce off your tree in your yard or Christmas tree and add with cinnamon, rosemary, or citrus. Play around with combinations to see what you like.
I found premixed spices like Pumpkin Spice or Gingerbread spice sprinkled over the apples or orange peels add an extra boost of scent.
The only down side is your kids willl come home and wonder where the pie is?!
Essential Oils are a safe alternative to synthetic fragrance. While they can make your home smell inviting and smell like the holidays they also have multiple health benefits. It’s a win win! I diffuse essential oils and clean with essential oils in my home daily. I have replaced synthetic fragrance room sprays with a quick homemade room and linen spray, and I also make cute little jars of baking soda and essential oils to set around my home. All this has replaced countless products that filled my home with toxins. The fun part is there are essential oils that smell like Fall and the Holidays. So when you diffuse nutmeg or Idaho Blue Spruce your home fills with a cozy atmosphere but you are actually filling the air with added benefits.
When inhaled Young Living Essential Oils have the capability of passing the “blood brain” barrier, work on emotions via the limbic system of your brain. Depending on what essential oil you choose to diffuse it can release emotional trauma, relax and clear the mind, or stimulate the brain. They increase atmospheric oxygen and remove toxin in the air. Plus they increase ozone and negative ions in the are which inhibit bacterial growth! I could go on. These oils are amazing. These are a few of the many reasons Ive kicked synthetic fragrance to the curb and have replaced with a more natural source.

These diffusing recipes can be altered to add to a linen spray and/or your thieves cleaner.
Room and Linen Spray
This recipe has replaced Febreeze and Lysol Sprays for me. I use it daily! It’s a perfect air and linen refresher without the toxins, so it’s safe to use on our sheets and carpets where our children lay and play. You can use any combo of essential oils that you prefer. I have two golden doodles and three toddlers. It’s perfect to spray in stinky shoes or my dog beds in between washes. With Fall coming this week I alter the diffuser recipes listed above to make an autumn room and linen spray. Try this! I promise you will love!
Recipe as Follows
You will need
8 oz glass spray bottle
1 Tablespoon of backing soda
20 drops of essential oil
fill the rest of the bottle with water. Shake and you are ready to use!
My favorite Fall recipes for the room and line spray is Pumpkin Spice or Warm Blankets.
